The study area is mainly affected by the external flows discharged in the area by the culverts under the Sultan Qaboos Highway and the Muscat Express Way in Muscat. Additionally, local rainfall tends to stagnate due to many complementary causes.

The objective of the design study was the definition of a drainage network able to protect the area from the external flows and drain the local rainfall. The Consultant has defined three levels of network (main, secondary and tertiary), aimed to provide 100% of protection from floods and stagnation. Driven by the morphology, the slopes have been kept slight (in the order of 0.2%) but sufficient to guarantee reasonable discharge capacities. The scheme presents the noticeable pro that is made up of independent sub-schemes that might be implemented in different phases.

Project area features:

  • 7 km along the coast
  • 25 km2 Project Area
  • 30,40 km of Main Channels
  • 20,45 km of Secondary Channels
  • 50,85 km Total Length of Channels
  • Return Period 30 years
  • Tertiary Network Total Length 124 km
  • Total sea discharge flood = 147,09 m3/s
  • Total incoming flood from upstream out of the project area = 97,1 m3/s
  • The incoming flood volume into the project area is 60% of the volume discharged at the sea
