Antalaha represents the second main harbor of Madagascar and departure point of vanilla trade coming from all Sava region and directed to the international port of Toamasina.
Following the heavy damages caused by the cyclon of April 2000 it was decided the reconstruction of the harbor consist essentially of the construction of a new quay suitable for boats up to 300 tonnes.
The structure of the quay is made up of a pre-cast beams and predalles joined at the top with a reinforced concrete slab. The quay foundation are driven steel piles. The works included the reclamation and dredging of the seabed. The access road to the harbor, which stretches along the coast, has been protected by by sheet pile walls and rock armour lining.
