Wilayat Mirbat, Dhofar Governorate, Sultanate of Oman

Wilayat Mirbat is on the central strip of the Dhofari coast, 70 km far from  Salalah. Its name is believed to have come from marbat al khail (lit. place where horses are tied up).

The Castle of Mirbat was built in the traditional Omani style of defensive architecture, which is atypical of many of the structures built in the area. The Mirbat castle was originally divided into three functional distinct areas: administrative, military and residential.

The proposed new exhibition, offers three exhibition sections corresponding to the original castle function: Ground floor: the Garrison, Omani Castle and Fort heart of Oman heritage.

The castle is a “museum of itself” and its visit is strictly connected with the new exhibition proposal: the 8 theme, indicated in the tender documents, are designed related to the original use of the castle.

More artifacts that represent the exhibition theme will be show in each room. Some exhibitions points dedicated to the music and dance of Oman Dhofari valleys (inserted in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) will be inserted in the visit path.

The museographical concept facilitates the architectural interpretation and the visit of the castle.
