LOCATION
Gela (CL) – Italy
Works included the construction of a new zoned earthfill dam with a central core downstream the old masonry dam, two morning glory spillways, two spillway tunnels. The 50 years old masonry dam acted upon a slide has been dismantled after the replacement with the new embankment terminated in 1995. Thirteen reinforced concrete shafts 12.5 m wide and 18-21 m deep, were located along the upstream toe of the embankment dam and founded in the in situ clay formation as a stabilizing measure for the new embankment.
The Reservoir
- Gross capacity 28,8 hm3
- Effective capacity 23,3 hm3
Main features of the Dam
- Type: zoned earthfill dam
- Reservoir capacity 28,8 hm3
- Earthfill volume: 3.500.000 m3
- Crest length: 646 m
- Maximum height: 68 m
- Spillway type and capacity: morning glory 1600 m3/sec
Foundation Soils
Two main geological structures were identified in the reservoir area: M. Garrasia synclinal and M. Cavallotti synclinal. the latter involves the dam works. The dam foundation insists on different types of soils. On the right abutment, there are marls (locally named TRIPOLI), limestone (Miocene – Gessoso-Solfifera series),fissured clays and varicoloured clays (Oligocene) On the other side there is a Tortonian marly clayey formation, covered with detritic soils.
Services provided by technicians of Sering
- Design of foundations
- Selection and control of materials for dam reconstruction
- Measurements with geotechnical instrumentation
- Consultancy Services during Supervision of works
