Abstract

The Akagera Water Supply System project, developed by SERING Ingegneria in collaboration with WSSD Ltd, addresses the need to improve access to drinking water in the Kayonza District, in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, an area particularly vulnerable to drought. Thanks to funding from the African Development Bank and support from the Rwandan government, the goal is to achieve 100% access to drinking water by 2024, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and national strategies.

The project involves the extraction of water from Lake Ihema, followed by a complex and innovative treatment process, which includes aeration, clariflocculation, filtration, and disinfection, to ensure compliance with international water quality standards. The infrastructure includes storage tanks and a distribution network designed to integrate with the existing system, ensuring efficiency and sustainability.

A distinctive feature is the use of advanced technologies, such as the SCADA system, for real-time monitoring and management of operations, optimizing the functioning and maintenance of the infrastructure. At the same time, in-depth studies on environmental and social impacts ensure that the project is sustainable and respectful of local communities and the ecosystem.
