Abstract
The project for the enhancement of the Al-Khaburah fishing port, in the North Batinah region, is an example of an infrastructural intervention aimed at meeting local, environmental, and productive needs. The initiative is part of a national strategic plan for the development of the fishing sector, with the goal of increasing productivity, improving the working conditions of fishermen, and enhancing the local economy.
The new configuration of the port involves the redevelopment of existing structures and the integration of new functional spaces. Special attention has been given to the organization of operational areas: the fishing zone includes a fish market designed to optimize the flow of goods, with separate spaces for auctions and retail sales, as well as facilities for the preservation and processing of fish, such as an ice production plant and cold storage warehouses.
The administrative and operational buildings, logically distributed within the port layout, ensure efficient management of activities. The control tower, strategically positioned, offers full visibility of the entire port area, improving coordination of operations. Common spaces, such as the rest and dining area, have been designed to promote socialization and interaction among port users, with architectural solutions that ensure comfort and accessibility.
From a technical perspective, the project has adopted materials and technologies designed to withstand marine environmental conditions, with particular emphasis on durability and reducing maintenance costs. The buildings, made with thermally insulated walls and flat roofs, have been integrated into the coastal landscape with attention to the natural and cultural context of the area. Traditional Omani architectural elements, such as geometric decorations and colors that evoke the desert environment, have been incorporated to enhance the local heritage.
The infrastructure also includes a marine workshop for boat repairs and an area dedicated to the maintenance of fishing nets, both designed to meet the daily needs of fishermen. The internal roads have been optimized to facilitate the transport of goods and access to the various sectors of the port, improving the overall efficiency of operations.
This project represents a strategic intervention that combines innovation, sustainability, and respect for local traditions, contributing to improving the economic and social conditions of the involved community.
