Abstract

The project for the protection of the slopes of the Bausher-Al Amerat road addresses the risks of rockfall and instability. The 14.5 km long road is one of the most important and strategic in the Sultanate of Oman. Geological analyses have highlighted variable rock formations, including metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, characterized by discontinuities and mechanical alterations. The Hoek & Brown geomechanical model was adopted to evaluate the properties of the rocks and identify the mechanisms of detachment and erosion.

The project included targeted interventions such as shotcrete with welded wire mesh, reinforced metal nets, rockfall barriers, and rock anchors. To manage water runoff and reduce erosion, drainage systems were incorporated. The classification of critical areas, based on the Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS), allowed for the definition of priorities and specific solutions to ensure safety and durability. This integrated technical approach ensures effective risk control and optimal protection of the infrastructure.
