Abstract
SERING, in collaboration with Studio Parcianello and Cooprogetti, has developed significant expertise in the design of cycling paths. Notably, it oversaw the development of an integrated cycling network within the City of Palermo as part of the “Soft Mobility Plan.” The key projects include the construction of a cycling network divided into three sections, totaling 80 kilometers.
Currently, two sections (28 kilometers) are under construction in the heart of Palermo: the South Coast Cycling Path, Central Station, Oreto Riverbank, and University Campuses, designed to connect strategic areas of the city.
Each designed segment reflects a focus on safety and sustainability, adopting an approach that integrates new cycling infrastructures with public green spaces and areas of historical and cultural interest. The network is composed of well-connected routes, with solutions that enhance user safety while adhering to updated regulatory standards, with special attention to the aesthetic of urban furnishings.
This infrastructure not only connects the city’s main hubs but also integrates with the public transport network (tram, bus, and metro), creating a multimodal and sustainable mobility system. Upon completion, this project will extend the network to over 100 kilometers, positioning Palermo as one of the Italian cities with the most extensive urban cycling networks.
Additional projects are underway in Sicily, focusing on towns around Mount Etna and one of the most important cycling paths in Eastern Sicily (Passi Iblei), which stretches from Ragusa to Syracuse. This route passes through eight municipalities in the scenic Iblei Mountains: Ragusa, Giarratana, Buscemi, Palazzolo Acreide, Cassaro, Solarino, Floridia, and Syracuse.
