Abstract

The development project for the drainage and sanitation system (DSDP) in the city of Dar es Salaam, planned for the period 2018-2035, is a strategic intervention to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change. The plan integrates both structural and non-structural solutions to improve urban resilience, water resource management, and sanitary conditions.

The technical analysis includes a detailed evaluation of the territory, considering topographic and climatic data, the condition of existing drainage networks, and flood-prone areas. Hydrological and hydraulic simulations, supported by advanced models such as HEC-HMS, have enabled the design of targeted interventions, such as the upgrading of existing channels and the introduction of new infrastructures for stormwater management.

The plan includes the update of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves to account for climatic variations, ensuring infrastructures capable of withstanding extreme events. Among the structural solutions, detention basins and trapezoidal channels are highlighted, designed to mitigate the impact of floods in the most vulnerable areas.

At the same time, strategies for solid waste and fecal sludge management are integrated, essential for reducing surface water pollution and improving urban quality. The expansion of the sewer network is also planned, with the adoption of decentralized wastewater treatment plants (DEWATS) in underserved areas.
This interdisciplinary approach ensures technically sound and sustainable solutions, transforming Dar es Salaam into a safer and more livable city in the long term.
