Abstract
The redevelopment project for the “Ex EAS” building in Palermo aims to restructure, seismically retrofit, and enhance the energy efficiency of a 1964 structure now designated for the Ministry of Justice as part of the PNRR. Structural interventions include improving seismic resistance by reinforcing columns and beams with fiber-reinforced concrete and carbon fibers, as well as creating a foundation coupling slab to distribute seismic stresses.
The building systems will be entirely renewed, with a focus on water and sanitation, fire prevention, and air conditioning systems. The water system will feature low-consumption devices, while the fire prevention system will include REI compartmentalizations, a hydrant network, and an aerosol extinguishing system. The air conditioning system will be enhanced with a geothermal heat pump and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery to ensure efficiency and thermal comfort.
On the energy front, a 136 kW photovoltaic system will cover part of the building’s energy needs, transforming it into a nearly zero-energy building (NZEB) compliant with DNSH requirements. This intervention emphasizes safety, sustainability, and energy savings, setting a benchmark for urban redevelopment projects.
