Abstract
The project for the replacement and improvement of critical bridges in the Greater Accra area represented a complex and multifaceted intervention aimed at addressing infrastructure issues and mitigating flood risks. Among the primary objectives was increasing the durability of infrastructures exposed to aggressive environmental conditions, such as humid climates, salinity, and variable loads. For this purpose, advanced materials, including high-strength steel and Corten steel, were used to ensure a long service life thanks to their resistance to corrosion and the technical solutions adopted, such as protective treatments and galvanization.
Particular attention was given to improving hydraulic capacity. The bridges were redesigned to provide a minimum clearance of 1.5 meters above anticipated flood levels, thereby reducing the risk of obstructions and improving water flow during extreme events. In some cases, such as the Dome Bridge, the shoulder width was increased from 12.5 to 25 meters to eliminate hydraulic bottlenecks and enhance hydraulic safety. Other interventions, such as the South Kaneshie Bridge, involved elevating the structure to increase clearance, while the Abossey Okai Bridge was redesigned as a steel arch bridge, eliminating intermediate supports and optimizing water flow management.
The construction and maintenance techniques were based on a long-term vision. The steel and reinforced concrete bridges were designed to ensure ease of maintenance and to withstand severe climatic conditions. Continuous monitoring was planned, with periodic inspections every 5–10 years to detect early signs of corrosion or deterioration, ensuring targeted and effective interventions. For reinforced concrete bridges, innovative solutions were adopted to protect the reinforcement bars, preventing structural damage caused by carbonation or water infiltration.
The project integrated technical solutions with territorial needs, ensuring that the structural modifications were compatible with the existing infrastructures. Surrounding roads were adapted to maintain continuity with the new bridges without compromising traffic flow. This approach, combining technological innovation and environmental sustainability, significantly improved the resilience of critical infrastructures, contributing to the safety and quality of life in the Greater Accra area.
