Abstract

The rehabilitation project of the Muhanga-Kisizi-Rwashamaire road in Uganda represents an example of integrated and multidisciplinary infrastructure intervention aimed at improving mobility and fostering economic development in the region. The road, with a total length of 78.8 km and currently classified as a gravel road, will be transformed into a Class C primary road with two 11-meter-wide lanes and hot asphalt paving. This intervention primarily involves the districts of Ntungamo, Rukungiri, and Kabale, including strategic sections to connect the centers of Muhanga, Kisiizi, Kebisoni, and Rwashamaire.

The project entails the construction of complex and diverse works, including an 85-meter-long three-span bridge, approximately 14 km of road embankments in swampy areas, and the design of 15 km of urban roads along the main route. The technical aspects have been addressed with a detailed and innovative approach: from geometric design calibrated for differentiated design speeds in mountainous and hilly areas (50-70 km/h) to access control to ensure safety and traffic continuity.

A distinctive element of the project is its focus on the environment and social impact, with analyses conducted in accordance with NEMA guidelines. The assessment considered mitigation measures for the protection of sensitive areas and the reduction of soil erosion. Furthermore, consultations with local communities were carried out to integrate specific needs and promote sustainable development.
