Abstract

The project for the completion and restoration of the new commercial dock of the Port of Catania focuses on addressing the issues that have compromised the functionality of the structure, while ensuring greater durability and safety. The main interventions concern the restoration of the seabed, the protection of vertical walls, and the consolidation of the backfill behind the quay.

For the restoration of the seabed, leveling and regularization to a depth of -13 m above sea level have been planned, necessary to mitigate erosion caused by ship maneuvers. On this surface, a stabilizing layer of fine stone and prefabricated concrete blocks has been planned, protected by high-strength geotextile.

The protection of the vertical walls has been designed by installing prefabricated high-strength concrete sheet piles, reinforced with bars made of materials resistant to marine corrosion. The sheet piles are driven deep and made integral with the existing structure, ensuring a stable and reliable seal.

The consolidation of the quay’s backfill has been defined using cement grout injections aimed at eliminating the detected voids and restoring the load-bearing capacity of the soil, essential for supporting port traffic and activities. The entire intervention is based on an in-depth analysis of the identified issues and on targeted design solutions to ensure the long-term functionality of the dock, a strategic element for maritime traffic in the region.
