Abstract
The Kilwa Masoko fishing port project is designed to strengthen Tanzania’s fisheries sector through a modern and integrated infrastructure, minimizing environmental impact.
The design is based on detailed analyses, including topographical, geotechnical, and environmental surveys, and includes a layout featuring a fish market, an administrative building, an ice production plant, a refrigerated storage facility, and a ship repair yard.
The maritime structures include four offshore docks, with varying lengths up to 223 meters and widths of 30 meters, as well as specific berths for mooring, outfitting, and maintenance, sized according to the needs of the expected fleets. The port entrance has been positioned along an existing road to reduce the impact of access works, while a ramp with a maximum slope of 15% connects the port platform to the road level.
The management of dredged material has been designed to minimize its impact, with provisions for its functional reuse within the port area. Solutions for wastewater management and advanced systems for water and energy supply are included.
The project, compliant with environmental regulations, meets the need to attract both national and international fleets, increasing the capacity for processing and preserving catch for both domestic and foreign markets, thereby contributing to the economic and employment improvement of the region.
