Abstract
The objective of the works was to assess the condition of existing slope cuts along the Dubai-Fujairah Freeway project, conduct additional site investigations, and design and implement protection measures, repairs, and remedial works. These measures included stabilization works to ensure adequate protection against collapse and safety measures to mitigate the risk of rockfalls for end-users.
The 44 km Dubai-Fujairah Freeway project runs through a mountainous area intersected by several wadi systems. The project involved a series of cut slopes ranging in height from 13 to 100 meters, with a total combined length of approximately 11,000 meters. The original design featured 2.5V:1H cut slopes, with 2-meter-wide berms at 8-meter vertical intervals.
The cut slopes experienced various types and scales of failures, ranging from localized bench failures to large-scale cut slope collapses. One section was reprofiled to 1V:1H following a complete failure.
All necessary stabilization and protection measures were successfully implemented, ensuring the safety and long-term stability of the slopes.
