Abstract

The safety interventions on the Monte Pellegrino slope, overlooking the Santa Maria dei Rotoli Cemetery, have mitigated the risk of rockfalls from the Pizzo Volo dell’Aquila cliff, protecting the graves and cemetery structures that had suffered repeated damage over time.
During the works, a project variation was introduced to adapt the passive protection measures to the requirements of the Oriented Nature Reserve and the Forestry Authority, with particular attention to the extent of the intervention areas and the size of the anchor foundations. Detailed inspections, conducted both on-site and with drones, allowed for the optimization of the interventions, which included high-energy absorption rockfall barriers and the consolidation of unstable blocks and extensive sections of fractured rock.
The works were structured into extensive interventions, covering highly fractured areas of the cliff, and targeted interventions, focused on stabilizing individual rock elements in precarious balance. The measures implemented have significantly reduced the instability of the rock mass, enhancing the safety of the area.
